BLOG SERIES: The Missing Link - LEADERSHIP (Episode 2) | Sam Adedayo

Yepeeee.....still in Christmas mood and rounding up the year. From me to you I wish you a merry Christmas in arears and a prosperous new year in advance. I am convinced that by now, you would have being reflecting on how the year 2015 played out with you. I mean a concise appraisal of your 12 months endeavor, point noting your weakness and analyzing your strength, identifying more opportunities and blowing off potential treats. The new year ahead promises so much that you can't afford to repeat the same mistake you made in the expiring year.

Alright! Lets get to the reason why I'm here. In the first episode of "The Missing Link" - (The Missing Link - LEADERSHIP | Episode 1), I exposed the root cause of lack of leadership and its manifestation in this dispensation, and we were able to deduce that a major cause in this menace is the "colonization", but like I do say, as a positive economist, I love to discuss solutions and not the problem (meanwhile the cause of the problem need be analyzed, and that is what we did in the first episose of this column).

I promise to give a comprehensive and long term relevant definition of leadership this time, but before I do that, I quickly want to point out some myths and misconceptions of leadership.

Leadership, although largely talked about, I have found out is one of the least understood concepts across all cultures and civilizations. Over time, I have stressed the prevalence of this misunderstanding, stating that the existence of several flawed assumptions, or myths concerning leadership often interferes with individuals' conception of what leadership is all about.

Some of the misconceptions of leadership include:

1) Leadership is innate: According to some, leadership is determined by Distinctive Dispositional
Characteristics present at birth (extraversion, intelligence, ingenuity). However it is important to note that leadership also develops through hardwork and careful observation.

2) Leadership is possessing power over others: Although to an extent, leadership is a form of power. Is not demacated by power over people -rather it is a power with people that exist as a reciprocal relationship between the leader and his or her followers. Despite popular belief, the use of manipulation, coercion and domination to influence others is not a requirement for leadership.

3) Leaders are either "Good or Bad": There is no such thing as "a bad leader", once a leader is bad, he ceases to be a leader. Occupying position is different from leadership. That is why some CEOs are rubber stamps. Many occupiers of positions are actually being led by lower cadre staffs. Leadership is about positive change and nothing more.

4) Leadership is not management of people: People are so complex to be managed, they may fake it and make you feel you are in charge but you cannot manage human spirits. It is the most unpredictable spirit with which you can deal.

5) The opposite of leadership is followership: Followership is not the opposite of leadership, rather, leadership begins at followership. If leadership and followership are opposite, little wonder why most leaders and their followers go in opposite directions.

All these above are misconceptions about leadership, they are what leadership is not.

LEADERSHIP therefore is concisely the ability to INFLUENCE. I will expanciate more in the next episode. Stay glued
